Initially a British Army camp used as a reception point for Dunkirk evacuees in 1940, the site was later developed into an airfield, with runways constructed in 1943. The airfield provided critical training for airborne operations, including the invasion of Sicily, the D-Day landings in Normandy, and the Battle of Arnhem.
